MODELING AND STUDY CONCEPTS


MODEL BUILDING IS ANOTHER PHASE OR STEP (NOT NECESSARILY REQUIRED) IN THE DESIGN PROCESS. 

MODELS MAY ALSO REINFORCE THE CREATIVE PROCESS. 

 

MANY TIMES A STUDY MODEL OR A SERIES OF MODELS MAY HELP TO DETERMINE THE MOST EFFICIENT PHYSICAL FORM A DESIGN TAKES.  MODELS MAY ALSO BE A TOOL TO  PROVIDE INFORMATION  WHEN COLLECTING MATERIAL LISTS AND BUILDING PRODUCTS. 

SITE MODELS AS WELL AS PROGRAM MODELS MAY ALSO PROVIDE CLUES AS TO THE INTERACTION OF THE ADJACENT CONDITIONS, SPACES AND ENVIRONMENTS.

MODELING CAN BE ACHIEVED BY TAKING A PRELIMINARY CONCEPT (DRAWING/SKETCH) AND APPLYING DIFFERENT TYPES OF SIMPLE MATERIALS AND CREATING A PHYSICAL FORM MODEL OF THE 2-DIMENTIONAL CONCEPT.

ANOTHER APPROACH IS TO CREATE A 3-DIMENTIONAL COMPUTER CONCEPT MODEL  AND APPLYING VARIOUS DIGITAL APPLICATIONS (COLOR, TEXTURE, GEOMETRY) TO REPRESENT REAL TIME FORM AND CONDITIONS.

WIRE FRAME IS ANOTHER TERM FOR A QUICK STUDY MODEL.  SIMILAR TO A SKELETON WITHOUT THE OUTER SKIN OR INTERIOR PARTS. THIS TYPE OF MODEL CAN BE CONSTRUCTED WITH SIMPLE AND EASILY OBTAINABLE MATERIALS.

COLOR AND TEXTURE OF VARIOUS MATERIALS REINFORCE THE DESIGN PROGRAM.  COLORED SAMPLES OF ROOF TILES GIVE AN INDICATION OF A DIRECTION TO TAKE WHEN CONSIDERING EXTERIOR COLOR AND ALSO USE OF TEXTILES AND FABRICS FOR INTERIOR DECOR.

 

 

IN SOME CASES AN EXISTING BUILT PROGRAM IS CHOSEN BECAUSE OF ELEMENTS IN THE PROGRAM. A QUICK STUDY BOARD AND A SCALED MODEL AID IN DECISION MAKING FOR SITE ISSUES, ORIENTATION FOR FENESTRATION EFFICIENCY AND SCALE OF THE DESIGN ITSELF.  IMPASSES ARE OFTEN SOLVED DURING STUDY SESSIONS. 

 

 

 

 

 

ANOTHER TYPE OF DESIGN CAN BE ONE OF DYNAMIC (IN MOTION) PROPERTIES.  THIS MODEL WAS BUILT TO STUDY WIND POWER.  THIS MODEL WAS PLACED ON A 360 DEGREE RING BEARING TRACK PLATFORM.  EXTENDED PANELS CATCH WIND AND MODEL WILL ROTATE.  SKIN ON PANELS IS SIMILAR TO NAUTICAL SAIL MATERIAL LIGHT WEIGHT, FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE.  IN REAL TIME THIS PROGRAM COULD PROVIDE A UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT FOR A SITE SPECIFIC LOCATION.  THE PROGRAM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE POWER FROM THE WIND AND ALSO PROVIDE AN EXTERIOR ENTERTAINMENT SPACE.
